Sonic Schizorealism, lecture about my work during RE:SOUND (DK)

Curator and writer Arkadiusz Póltorak (PL) is contributing to RE:SOUND, the 8th International Conference on the Histories of Media Arts 2019 – Aalborg, Denmark with:
“A schizoanalytical perspective on Cilia Erens’ sound works and binaural recording” (publication December 2019).
His paper session is part of the theme ‘Locating the Real’; session chair Rahma Khazam.

Abstract:

Since early 1980s, the Dutch artist Cilia Erens has carried out experiments with binaural recording in close collaboration with sound engineers. My Talk in the series “Sniffing Ether” of WORM / Klangendum in Rotterdam will be about listening to low mid high frequency-ranges in China’s daily urban sound environment.

‘The audible space, LMH Frequencies’ is a talk about ways of listening … about how, during my sound research in China in the autumn of 2015, I started to tune in to frequency ranges in order to get to grips with the radical urban development of this country (1986-2015).

Lecture at the Master of Film (The Netherlands Film Academy Amsterdam)
about how I listen to how life manifests itself in sound and how I make these vital processes part of my work. I will elaborate on my working process by referring to some of my recent activities: the multiple awarded ‘Via Dolorosa’ (2013) by video artist / filmmaker Menno Otten, ‘Niets laat me vermoeden’ / ‘There’s nothing to tell me’ (2015), an interactive GPS Soundwalk in nature about World War 1, and my most recent research project: a ‘listening research trip’ to urban China. This will lead to a new work, ‘Time Lapse China’.

‘About the real and the true’ is the theme of the Studium Generale at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague.

My lecture is about ‘Sound Space Identity’ on 12 Februari 2015.

I would like to question the emphasis our culture puts on the visual: perhaps we would gain a better understanding of our world if we listened to it more and looked at it less.
